TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback isn't worried about an amendment added to a bill funding construction of a new biosecurity lab in his state.
Brownback spokesman Brian Hart said Monday the amendment from Montana Sen. Jon Tester isn't likely to block the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility.
The Department of Homeland Security plans to build the lab at Kansas State University. Last week, the Senate passed an appropriations bill with $36 million for construction.
Tester's amendment says no money can be spent until after the department finishes a study of what's required to operate the lab safely. Also, the department must spell out how it would deal with an accidental release of foot-and-mouth disease.
But Hart said such a study normally is part of the process.
